HAPPY NEW YEAR, GEZUAR VITIN E RI!

31ST. DECEMBER 2010 HAPPY NEW YEAR, GEZUAR VITIN E RI!
The days have passed quickly since Christmas Day. We have had visitors from Schodra -a Lebanese priest and two young men. Our Maltese friends accommodated them for us and they spent the time here. We began with Mass and later had a truly Lebanese meal. Then we brought our visitors to Prespa Vogel, a place of beauty in the area. A good time was enjoyed by all.

Now, I say Happy New Year, Gezuar Vitin e Ri, Frohes Neues Jahr, Bonne Annee and Blian Sona Duit!

Remember/Resolution!

"Men build their heavens as they build their circles
Of friends. God is in the bits and pieces of Everyday -"
Patrick Kavanagh

I pray that 2011 will be a year of special grace, richy blessed for each one, with good health and many gifts.

The fireworks have already started here. We have planned a Communion Service for late in the evening and then we go to the Cathedral to await the Midnight Bells!

CHRISTMAS 2010 SO FAR...........!

27TH. DECEMBER 2010 CHRISTMAS 2010 SO FAR......!
Our Christmas began with an 9.00a.m. concert at Preca College on the 23rd. The students were great and that included our friend, Adelajda. She took part in a difficult mime and really gave its message very clearly. The dramatic items were excellent and it was a treat to hear all the carols in English!

On Christmas Eve, we joined our Maltese friends for a procession through the streets with the Divine Infant. People came and stood to enjoy the carols we sang en route. This year we were able to join in a little with the Shqip! The procession ended here and all had refreshments - lots of requests for the mulled wine recipe - Sr. Anna, take a bow!

We have been really blessed as we had a priest for 11.00p.m. Mass on Christmas Eve - and this was followed by hot chocolate and biscuits in the foyer! On reaching home, we indulged in hot Mince Pies and Brandy Butter - part of a hamper from my sister, Bernie, and family. We then took some time to exchange gifts. We also had an 11.00a.m. Mass on Christmas Day. What a surprise when friends called in the afternoon and the first few told us we had been on Television. A man, making a video the night before, works with National TV, and a few snippets of his work were shown.

We were "open for visitors" from 3.30p.m., a Korce tradition. We were surprised the people called so promptly. Again, we served mulled wine and Lebanese traditional cake for Christmas. Every guest was gifted with a bag of German "Plezen" as they left. My spelling may not be perfect but the variety of homemade German biscuits was guaranteed to delight! Later in the evening when the young adults got out the organ and the Albanian and English carols got under way, we replaced the Christmas cake with lots of savoury favourites! We were delighted Mirjam arrived back from the Mass for the young people in Pogradec before we finished.

We were very happy to receive so many greetings over the past few days. Phone calls, emails, Facebook messages, and of course letters and cards. Its a great time of year and we still have the New Year! Yesterday, we went with the women from the Church for a meal. There were 14 of us and the three Maltese catechists who really have kept the church alive here in Korce.

With thanks and prayers for each one who has been in touch. Have a good week to complete 2010!

CHRISTMAS, THE PAST, PAPAL NUNCIO VISIT.

22nd.DECEMBER 2010 CHRISTMAS, THE PAST, PAPAL NUNCIO VISIT.
Christmas is very close! On Monday, we visited the local State-run Children's Home. We had a delightful time with the 14 young residents. They were aged up to 6 years. Santa Claus was with us and also we had the organ for carols and DANCE! Great!
Later, I went to a concert and enjoyed lots of carols. We also saw a group of children but just for one song! Proceeds were for the victims of the Schodra flooding. They have suffered so badly again this year.

It is great to see a joyful approach to Christmas! My 'Better English' student , who is a teacher, spoke this week of 'Christmas in the past'. Her memories of pre-1990, when religious practice was forbidden and with no religion in schools! 25 December was a school and work day. There were just two days off to celebrate the "New Year Tree". Friends who have spent 18 years here, speak of a 'dark city', without street lighting of any kind and not a trace of Christmas. Thank God this is changing! The people are learning how to celebrate and enjoy. They have a whole new vocabulary too.
Just now, there is a huge rush for Passports. In a few weeks, people will be able to travel, without a visa, to many countries. Albania is finally opening to the world!

On Monday last, Mirjam went, as part of our URAT anti-trafficking group, to meet the Papal Nuncio. She was happy when he spoke good English! He has promised to visit us here. Now that our registration is complete, we too have a moment to celebrate!

Happy Christmas to each one - in Bolivia, Brazil,Florida and to other USA readers. Also, my greetings to Irish blog readers, to those in UK, Europe, Singapore, Ethiopia and Madagascar. Let's be united in Spirit at this very special time!

GREECE BRIEFLY! IRISH PRIEST SINGERS.

15TH.DECEMBER 2010 GREECE BRIEFLY! IRISH PRIEST SINGERS.
On Friday last, Lalini and I made a very brief visit to Greece - a first for me! We were en route to the city nearest here when we ran into a blizzard. Our driver at that moment discovered he had 'summer tyres' on his car. When he had been helped to turn the car, we set out for Korce. The weather was fine on this side of the border.

We heard from our Maltese friends that our Irish Priest Singers were on Italian TV on Saturday night. I was delighted when David found their first song on You Tube and emailed it to me. It was a treat - "You Raise Me Up". I believe they were also interviewed in Italian. That would not have been a problem after their years in the Irish College. I was even more pleased to hear, later on Sunday, that the new CD they launched on the 8th. December -"Noel" is on its way to us here in Korce!

Yesterday brought us "Sacred Space 2011" and also its Advent companion booklet, plus CD's and other 'goodies' from Sr. Bernie, Dublin. So, we are all set, not only for Christmas, but for the New Year as well!

Have a good journey for this last week to Christmas!

CORRECTION, PARTY AND TODAYS FEAST!

8TH. DECEMBER 2010 CORRECTION, PARTY AND TODAYS FEAST!
A dedicated blog reader very kindly contacted me to point an error in my last entry! In my enthusiastic description of Bigell, our mountain setting of last week, I added an extra nought to our 1,500 metres altitude and so appeared higher than Everest! At most times, I am known to keep my feet firmly on the ground!

On Monday evening, St. Nicholas' Day we were invited out to dinner by a group of neighbours. We were really pleased and we thoroughly enjoyed the festive evening. A new experience for me earlier was that of making a 'Feastday call' to another neighbour. Traditionally, people do this here. I stayed about an hour during which Nicholas had four friends call. Each was welcomed, had a drink and chocolate and then left. Also, he got three telephone greetings from friends who could not call!

Today, we hope to have an afternoon Mass and we also celebrate two anniversaries of Mirjam. I will check out the details of these later.
Enjoy the feast!

MOUNTAIN-TOP, CATECHIST CEREMONY.

5TH. DECEMBER 2010 MOUNTAIN-TOP AND CATECHIST CEREMONY.
Weather-wise, our part of Europe seems to have been a little better than Ireland, England and Germany over the past week. The North of Albania is badly flooded though. The Official Process closure that I mentioned last week has had to be postponed. This is due to the fact that the city of Shkodra is flooded to within a short distance of the Cathedral. We have had some torrential rain here. Snow did not re-appear until today.

I was invited to a day out on Friday last! This was with a group of physiotherapy patients and staff. I had not attended the Centre and was invited through our Sister Amira. Also, three of our young adults travelled with us and provided great music throughout the day. We travelled to the mountain by bus. When the road ended we finished the final short stint on foot! We arrived in a hall and catering unit that is a rest centre for enthusiastic skiers, later in the year. I was amazed to see our local mountain-top, Morava, looking like a tiny dot in a valley. I then realized we were at 15,000 metres altitude and it was CHILLY!

Today, we were invited to the Ceremony of Candidacy for Mario, a 23 year old who is joining our Maltese catechists. This is his first step and the Ceremony resembled that of our Profession. His Muslim family and friends attended. Altogether, it was a truly joyful evening.

Tomorrow St. Nicholas is celebrated - great excitement among the children here!

'LIFE IS BEST EXPLAINED BY STORIES'

28TH. NOVEMBER 2010 'LIFE IS BEST EXPLAINED BY STORIES'.
Saturday evening, the 20th., was special. We were eight nationalities to which we added a further element with our Renewal of Vows in French. Afterwards, we shared an informal meal to celebrate!

When returning from the city centre on Sunday afternoon, Kliti, our architect, said we were very near the former Catholic Church. So, of course, I requested to see it!
A retired actress, who has been awarded Actor Emeritius, told us its history. When put out of use, it was converted into four apartments and these are still in use. With the arrival of democracy, the City Council offered the site of our present church at the edge of the city, by way of compensation.

Today and tomorrow are two holidays. Both commemorate the gaining of freedom from other countries, one on the 29th. November 1944. This accounts for my hearing the same song many times on Friday, as I returned in the furgon from Tirana. The song -'Let us live free'. The person beside me said its the most meaningful anthem for his peers - all in their 30's. It was composed just as another freedom, that followed the problems of 1997, arrived!

Another crumb of history! On Wednesday next, the Official Process for the canonization of a Bishop and 37 clerics, including one Orthodox, will be formally closed and the Process will move to Rome and continue. They were all martyred. One lived in Maliq, about 20kms. from here and there were local witnesses available to the Process team. Hopefully, we will hear about this darker side of our story in due course.

In the meantime, happy Advent! Gezuar!

URAT AND PLANNING MEETINGS, RENEWAL

19TH. NOVEMBER 2010 URAT AND PLANNING MEETINGS, RENEWAL.
Mirjam and I travelled by 'furgon' minibus to Tirana on Monday. We attended the URAT meeting on Tuesday where I did the CEDAW Powerpoint. We also had a German Sister who works with Solwodi in Germany. This is a group begun by a Sister for victims of trafficking and domestic violence.

On Wednesday we had a regional Planning Meeting with a priest from Elbason. We met with the Franciscan Sisters and our Maltese friends. We got December arrangements completed with ease, making the most of the limited human resources available!

Today, I met with a lady of Greek origin. Marietta has been invited to Paris on holiday and needs ease in speaking English. Husband of her French hostess is English and Marietta had difficulty speaking when this couple visited her here. So, we used the computer and spoke on current affairs. The hour and a half sped by! We plan to meet once or twice a week for the present.

We will have a quiet day tomorrow. Our friends will join us here in the evening for Mass and our Renewal of Vows.

Enjoy the 21st. and have a good weekend!

BOLIVIAN FRIEND ENJOYS "SACRED SPACE"

14TH.NOVEMBER 2010 BOLIVIAN FRIEND ENJOYS "SACRED SPACE"
I want to share the opening sentence and closing point from a blog follower's email received from Bolivia this morning. "Thank you so much for sharing the Sacred Space page with me, I have been using it and find it exceptionally helpful."

At the very end of the mail - "Anyway, I had been reading.......until you sent me the info. on the Sacred Space web page. It has been a God sent, truly, a bit less demanding and in many ways more reassuring, kind of like praying the rosary, kind of like feeling at home."

So, I am happy to pass on this word of appreciation of Sacred Space. No doubt, many of its 20 million users, in the 22 languages, enjoy the site. Maybe this word will tempt a few other blog followers to Google in the words Sacred Space and see what happens for them!

Thank you, my friend, in faraway Bolivia. May Sacred Space continue to be a blessing for you and each member of your family.

TURAN, JOURNEY OF ENRICHMENT, MASS

10TH NOVEMBER 2010 TURAN, JOURNEY OF ENRICHMENT, MASS.
On Saturday we accepted an invitation to Turan, a Bektashi Muslim village, very near Korce. It is the home of an English catechist, Nicky, who is a friend of ours. We arrived in time for her catechism class. Twelve children attended and their enthusiasm and confidence in answering were admirable. The visit would have been worthwhile just to see the Red Sea Story dramatized with great effect! We then visited a Muslim family that had already come here. In fact, they helped in sorting out problems we had when arranging for internet. We really enjoyed the visit.

On Sunday evening, we began "Our Journey of Enrichment". The Powerpoint was clear and informative. It was a great learning curve about the Our Lady of Charity life and our shared history. We continued the theme for our Hour of Prayer.

A telephone call from Bilisht late on Sunday evening invited us to Mass. Mirjam and I were able to juggle our commitments and the two of us set off on Monday morning. Bilisht is just half an hour away, with an excellent road. We were glad to make the journey as we had not had Mass on Sunday. The Italian priest travelled more than three hours each way.

Today it is time for a special prayer as four family members are en route to Singapore. They will join those who went at the weekend. Six more travel this evening. That will be quite a Cork contingent for the rest of the week!

There are Remembrance Day events on here - so in the spirit of the day I say - Au revoir!

CONCERT, SISTERS VISIT, SURPRISE, TODAY !

3RD. NOVEMBER 2010 CONCERT,SISTERS VISIT, SURPRISE, TODAY!
On Sunday I went along to a very enjoyable early evening concert. It would have been even more enjoyable if I had gone a little earlier, as concerts here tend to get crowded. The programme was of high standard, with classical instrumentalists and excellent singers. I was glad it finished at 7.45p.m. as we had planned to have the 'Journey of Enrichment' Powerpoint at 8.00p.m. However, the 'beamer' and PP did not meet, so we await another evening!

Two Little Company of Mary Sisters are visiting for 10 days. They were based here and return each year as they carry financial responsibility for the Hospice they opened.

We had a lovely surprise on Monday. Maltese Rainer telephoned to say an English priest had arrived. Father came to visit us and then said Mass in the parish church that afternoon. He promised to come to our house early yesterday and so we had a Mass on All Souls Day - a great treat for us.

Today is the first anniversary of our arrival in Korce! We see it as a moment to celebrate, as we move into another year. Alleluia!

LIGHT SNOW AND PLANNING H.R. TRAINING

29TH. OCTOBER 2010 LIGHT SNOW AND PLANNING HUMAN RIGHTS TRAINING.
Yesterday morning there was a light dusting of snow on Mali i Thate, our granite "Dry
Mountain" horizon. What looked like a coating of icing sugar sent a clear message that Winter is en route. This was confirmed by a sharp drop in temprature.

Today we had a group from Tirana. Anna, Manager of a Training NGO, Sr. Imelda, Loreto who has been so welcoming to us for URAT meetings mainly, Maureen, parish leader of a fundraising group in Birmingham, England, that donates to the Roma group in Tirana and Petrie, their driver. We had a good meeting. Anna offered to do some Human Rights Training with a group of women and we hope that this will take place later. This awareness-raising about human rights is needed here in Albania and its also a suggested follow-up requested by CEDAW. Sr. Amira prepared a delicious lunch while we talked and all enjoyed the meal. Afterwards, I went with the group to direct them to their next visit. On the way, I asked Maureen about her Irish roots. She told me - "My father was born in Leap, West Cork, so we now we always holiday in Clonakilty and Inchydoney". I surprised her by saying - "My father was also born near Leap in West Cork and my life up to entering Good Shepherd was spent in Clonakilty and Inchydoney!!" Small world surely.

Enjoy the weekend! My "Better English" young people tell me - "We are not allowed to celebrate Hallow 'een in Albania!" I will have to search further for the reason.

COMMUNITY MEETING AND DAJTI EKSPRES

25th. OCTOBER 2010 COMMUNITY MEETING AND DAJTI EKSPRES
We met with Sr. Daniela on Friday in Tirana for an evaluation meeting. Our setting was a little unusual. We got a quiet area in a restaurant where we were left in peace! We finished with a look at the future and Sr. Lalini's appointment as Co-Ordinator for another year. Our day ended with a very pleasant visit to a Chinese restaurant.

Saturday seemed ideal to all of us for a visit to Mother Teresa's Exhibition for her special year. We discovered, however, that she had packed up and gone 'home' to Skopje, Macedonia! I have heard since that the exhibition was very small - showing just Mother Teresa's rare visits to Albania and without reference to her global role.

A new plan emerged for us quite quickly, with Mirjam at her computer! Off we set with a handrawn map! We took the Dajti Ekspres to "where the earth meets the sky". In fact, we had a glorious morning in a National Park on the summit of a mountain range very close to Tirana. There was just one slight 'glitch'. When we gathered to take the return Cable Car, we were told there was a power cut! Luckily, with the help of a generator, it was brief. We made the airport in record time for Daniela's plane.

Special thanks to all who were in touch over the past week with Waterford details.

SR.DANIELA'S VISIT, SR. MARIE MURPHY RIP

21ST. OCTOBER 2010 SISTER DANIELA'S VISIT, SR. MARIE MURPHY RIP.
Our week began with a half-day Anti-Trafficking conference at the Catholic University
in Tirana on Monday. It was well attended by young people in third-level education, clergy, and a great number of interested professionals. A young Albanian Sister gave a short input and Powerpoint about the setting up of URAT - our group for religious to work on anti-trafficking issues. It was well received.
I met with Filloreta Kodra, Deputy Minister for Labour, who was Head of Delegation in New York for the CEDAW Meeting. I was able to update her on work in Korce. She gave a good talk. In fact she was substituting for her boss who was listed on the programme. We were fortunate in getting a few young people to do translation for us.
That made the event worthwhile for us.

We have had Sr. Daniela here with us since Monday. We also had a German Good Shepherd
candidate here for just two days. Andrea accompanied Sr. Mirjam from Germany. She saw a good piece of Albania during her brief visit.

Today, I am feeling very sad as Sister Marie Murphy RIP, Novitiate Companion and friend over the years, is being buried in Waterford. She will be mourned by her community, us, her four companions, her family and very many friends. On Thursday last, a number of friends contacted with news that she had suffered a serious relapse in her illness. Thank God she did not suffer too long.

Again - have a good weekend!

GOLDEN CRUCUSES AND TIRANA

17TH. OCTOBER 2010 GOLDEN CROCUSES AND TIRANA - BRIEF UPDATE.
A beautiful bowl of golden crocuses on the Altar for Mass brought home to me the fact that seasons are slightly different here in Albania. None of the locals thought it strange - they are used to seeing this Spring flower in the Autumn!

Lalini and I leave for Tirana this afternoon. We go to attend an Anti-Trafficking event tomorrow, at the Catholic University there. Sr. Mirjam and Postulant Andrea arrived there last evening. Sr. Daniela arrives this afternoon so we will have a good group. We plan to return here tomorrow evening.

Have a good week.

ST.FRANCIS, VOSKOPI, ENGLISH GROUP

8TH OCTOBER 2010 ST.FRANCIS, VOSKOPI, ENGLISH GROUP.
We had a surprise invitation to Bilhist, home of three Italian Franciscan Sisters. Afternoon Mass for St. Francis and an enjoyable 'cuppa'. Communication was limited! Their Italian and 10 years Albanian had little meeting point with our French, English and 'infant' Shqip!

Yesterday, we were invited to a nearby village or 'fshat' Voskopi, just six kms. from Korce. An elderly grandmother had spent the night and morning preparing traditional dishes to extend Albanian hospitality. Little 4 year old Elicia, who is undergoing hip surgery, her sister Bresilda, and her mother came with us. We all enjoyed the visit - family ties are very close here. This is really apple country and we returned sufficiently laden to supply our neighbours.

You may recall I spoke of the young people requesting to speak better English! I did not set up a formal class. When a few come we have English conversation. Today was one such day. Two groups came - they are 12 year olds. Their 'hero' since we came is a '16' year old singer J.Bieber! He had just been arrested in USA as he was a 51 year old evil man cleverly disguised. They really needed a listening ear to sort out their confusion!

Have a good weekend. The weather has suddenly turned really cold here.

CEDAW WORKSHOP AND BISHOP'S VISIT

3RD. OCTOBER 2010 CEDAW WORKSHOP AND BISHOP'S VISIT.
Yesterday was indeed a crumb of history for us! We had our Workshop and twenty-two persons came. These included twelve Americans, mostly from the Peace Corps. A few had travelled up to seven hours, from as far away as Saranda and Lushnja, to get here. Ten other people, all of whom understood English joined us. These included the staff person at the Domestic Violance Unit and also the lawyer, who told us of the good work done in relation to the woman we referred to the Unit. This lawyer will continue with the work for trafficked women that she has in hand. We plan to cooperate with her if the opportunity arises. Our objective of awareness-raising was achieved and new contacts made too. Following a lively discussion, we all enjoyed a tasty Buffet! Today, a number of emails have come expressing appreciation for the afternoon.

Our Bishop came for Mass today. When he had finished, the people spoke up and asked what of his promise that there would be Mass every Sunday? We were not clear how the discussion ended but it seemed peacefully! Later, he called here and brought Charlie to interpret. He wanted to know if any progress had been made in relation to building in Pogradec. Amira and I were here and we suggested he discuss this with Sr. Daniela later in the month. As he left we extended greetings for the feast of St. Francis tomorrow as he is a Franciscan.

Have a good week!

AMIRA'S RETURN, CEDAW POWERPOINT

29TH. SEPTEMBER 2010 AMIRA'S RETURN, CEDAW POWERPOINT.
We were delighted to welcome Amira on Monday afternoon - its good to have three of us here. She was very tired and had been travelling from Lebanon since 2.00a.m. on Sunday.

I have been occupied getting together a Powerpoint presentation for our Workshop on Saturday next. Its only my second time making a Powerpoint. For that reason, I welcomed an Albanian friend who spent two hours with me, getting it together. More time might have produced a different item. I am happy to be ready since yesterday and hopefully the CEDAW message will be heard!

So, I say 'au revoir', now that we are back to French!

SPECIAL CORK, TIRANA AND KORCE EVENTS!!

22nd.September 2010 SPECIAL CORK, TIRANA AND KORCE EVENTS!!
Thank you Noeleen for sending me the news of Cork's All-Ireland victory!

On Monday, Lalini and I travelled to Tirana for an afternoon meeting of URAT. Our advocate, Florian, attended as we finalized the Statutes. The symbolism of the word URAT together with the English possibility of U.R.A.T. were detailed. I will send those few lines when the next two stages are completed. Now the Statutes, when all is corrected, will go to the Bishops Conference, where hopefully there will not be too much editing! Then they have to be sent to a legal Tribunal for ratification, so all this will take a little time yet.

We arived back yesterday afternoon, in good time to get a telephone call from Fr. Kusan. He had promised to visit Korce, if at all possible, prior to his departure from Ohrid. He told us he would come THIS MORNING with a group that would include five Jesuits and a few Croatians! Altogether, ten men arrived. They were from Lithuania, Germany, four Croatians, Macedonia, Sweden, Austria and also one Orthodox seminarian from Macedonia to complete the group. There was one Diocesan priest and the remainder were Jesuit seminarians, with one exception. There was a University Professor travelling with the group. He is completely blind. We had a beautiful Mass here with lots of singing. Then, we shared a great meal that was enjoyed by all. As they were leaving, Bea, our landlady, and I took them to visit the Orthodox Cathedral, as its quite beautiful. En route, we met a Prifti - I asked him to come with us but he was unable to do so. The group was delighted with that visit too.

Now, life has returned to an even keel!

NEW PROJECT, POPE AND BBC, ALL-IRELAND!!

19TH.SEPTEMBER 2010 NEW PROJECT, POPE AND BBC, ALL-IRELAND!!
On Wednesday last we had a small meeting here. Lalini was in Tirana and members of the Evangelical Church requested to visit in order to discuss a new venture. A new unit has been opened for victims of Domestic Violance. I was delighted to hear this and even more pleased that I was invited to visit the unit on Thursday next. Its only occupant is a lady that we referred for help when we were here little more than a week. Also, it was good to hear she has been helped by a lawyer that I know quite well who is working 'gratis'. That morning I began to doubt that there WAS a project! The meeting at first was a series of questions from the Americans about CEDAW and New York!

As you know, we can tune in effectively to BBC only very rarely. Friday was an exception! I tried, and saw the Pope at Westminister with Rev. Rowan Williams. It was a real treat for Lalini and me to see the whole Ecumenical Service there. We had perfect 'reception'. I felt this little laptop gave superb service!

On a different level, I have tried in vain to catch a glimpse of the All-Ireland Final between Cork and Down this afternoon! I am sure the result will reach me soon enough!

Have a good week!

RETREAT, WEDDINGS AND AN EARTHQUAKE!

13TH. SEPTEMBER 2010 RETREAT, WEDDINGS AND AN EARTHQUAKE!
My journey to Macedonia by public transport was an adventure! It gave me three hours at St. Naum. This is a very beautiful resort on Lake Ohrid. It has an empty Orthodox Monastery and a hotel. I had time to attend a marriage in the tiny 18th. Century Orthodox Church. About 20 of the 100 guests came into the Church so there was room for a tourist and me. She was from Hawaii and has already sent me photos of the event! I took the public bus to Ohrid.

On Sunday, Father Kusan introduced me to two Dublin visitors after Mass. Joe is a Garda from Carlow and his 85 year old mother is on a holiday with him! He is based just over the Albanian border in Kosovo. He is an Adviser to a Unit of 200 border police. His brief includes trafficking and related matters and he could be a good resource for us in the future and would be happy to cooperate with us.

My retreat was truly blessed with excellent weather. I had the support of nine Franciscan priests from Albania who were also on retreat. I returned here on Friday.

On Saturday evening we had a wedding in our Korce Church. The bride was local and the groom was English, as was the priest. A moment after the couple had pronounced their vows, there was an EARTHQUAKE - a dramatic moment! The Church rocked and shuddered and there was a very loud noise. No damage except to window frames, thank God. All the buildings in Korce were affected and there were some wall cracks, but nothing more serious. The 'quake epicentre was 25 miles away and it registered 4.2 on the Richter Scale.

Father Kusan telephoned yesterday evening. He said he wanted to record that he was most impressed with the 12 young adults that Sister Lalini had brought for four days to Ohrid. They had taken a guitar, and organ and a mandolin and their music enriched the retreat days. He said the boys have had great formation and the girls will soon catch up with Good Shepherd involvement.

On Wednesday, it will be a year since we began our journey to Albania! So, au revoir rather than Mirupafshim for today!

Friday, 3 September 2010

TRAFFICKING ON THE AGENDA

3rd. September 2010 TRAFFICKING ON THE AGENDA.
A brief work update of the week as I leave for Orhid a day early! On Wednesday I met with three members of the Peace Corps. They were most interested in the CEDAW report and discussed the possibility of having a meeting with volunteers who work with health issues out in the rural areas. This was followed up with a further meeting today. We hope to have the Trafficking get-together - a report on the CEDAW process - as close as possible to the end of the month. We can then inform the group that there will be a public event arranged to take place in Tirana for the Annual Anti-trafficking Day in October. So, things are beginning to happen that will hopefully lead to concrete improvements for Albanian women.

Au revoir till next time!

BOBOSHTICE, CONCERT, RETREAT IN ORHID

1ST. SEPTEMBER 2010 BOBOSHTICE, CONCERT, RETREAT IN ORHID.
This week has had a 'school' dimension, as our Shqip sessions continue. There was a touch of holiday around as the youth group planned a four day trip to Macedonia that began today.

On Friday we went to Boboshtice - a little village near Korce, famous for 'manna' - large balackberries that grow on trees more than two metres tall. With the help of two of our youth group we filled two small pots. These were given to our teacher and friend, Nadia, to make jam or liqueur. We await the outcome!

Sunday was quiet and in the evening I went to a concert, courtesy of the Tourist Board! We had three locals who work internationally - a pianist, a tenor and a soprano. They sang from "My Fair Lady" and the other items were familiar classics. We
heard no English but Italian, German and Spanish. The audience was thrilled by the high standard of it all and especially with the few Shqip songs with local flavour, that completed a great evening.

On Sunday, please God, I plan to travel to Macedonia in the minibus that goes to bring the youth group, and Lalini, back. I will stay some days to complete my retreat begun in upstate New York! I'll add a prayer for our Netherlands Good Shepherd. I am aware there will be a number of familiar faces to rejoice in the 150 years of presence and to celebrate!

MIRJAM, MORAVA CLIMB AND ESTA!

25TH. AUGUST 2010 MIRJAM, MORAVA CLIMB AND ESTA!
Mirjam travelled via SLOVENIA,where she changed planes and was due in Frankfurt at 7.00p.m. Much later, she telephoned to say her plane could not land, due to very heavy rain, and they were diverted to another airport. We spoke with Sr. Gudula and we were relieved to get another call, well after midnight, to say Mirjam was then in a taxi en route to Frankfurt convent.

Yesterday, Lalini and a group of young people climbed Morava mountain to our landmark Cross. I went with them at 7.00a.m. for a mile or so, but had to return as I had an appointment at 9.00a.m. and, anyway, I had completed the climb in January.

In the afternoon I was in a shop downtown. A little girl I had often met on the road was there with her mother. They approached me and the mother requested I take Esta for English. She has had six years study in school but cannot speak yet! Today, Esta arrived punctually, with a friend. Both are 11 years and we had a nice session. I was doing the verb 'to be' and one phrase was 'I am happy'. When Esta spoke she said - " I am happy because now I can talk to you"! I think they will progress very quickly.

It is very hot here now - it must be 28 or 30 degrees at the very least. Sister Armelle has arrived in Ireland and I hope there is sunshine to greet her. Sister Monica, Argentina, emailed toady and it is very cold there. She sent photographs of our days at UN CEDAW.
Enjoy the holidays!

MALTESE MASS AND ORTHODOX WEDDING

22ND AUGUST 2010 MALTESE MASS AND ORTHODOX WEDDING
The past few days have brought a round of visiting and generally settling in - plus answering endless enquiries for "krahu tua" - my arm! Many are amazed its back to normal, thank God.

Ola was first on the list as I had attended the Gyne.Clinic and the Echo Test Centre with her each month. Now her baby boy is a month old and in great health.

We were invited to a wedding today. This meant we visited the family on Thursday evening. The groom's father is a Greek Orthodox priest, Prifti, and their house is very close to ours. It was full on Thursday evening, with lots of dancing. When we visited, luckily, a girl I had met when en route to Tirana, arrived at the same time. She was great and interpreted for us, explaining the customs. The wedding today was very beautiful - their Bishop did the ceremony assisted by more than eight priests. It took more than an hour. Both bride and groom are from here but live in the USA. We were happy to be included with the neighbours.

Last evening we had a surprise invitation to the Maltese house - a priest visiting in Tirana had arrived unexpectedly and would say Mass. We set off quickly! Then today, in our Church, he had no Italian Missal so he used English, with Albanian translation - to the surprise of the people and my delight!

Mirjam is all set now for an early start in the morning and I am ready to take up Albanian classes also tomorrow so life will be on an even keel again.

Have a good week!

BELFAST, KORCE AND MACEDONIA!

19TH AUGUST 2010 FEAST OF ST.JOHN EUDES. BELFAST, KORCE AND MACEDONIA!
All is well, thank God, since I left Belfast. In Tirana, two messages awaited me from the Albanians that were in New York. I did not accept the invitation to take coffee as I was anxious to get on the road early. I postponed the coffee until a time I'll be in Tirana for a meeting. As a result, I got here by 1.00p.m. Lalini and Mirjam had a great welcome for me and seemed especially pleased about my arm being back to normal. We had a great sharing at our evening meal of the highlights while I was in Ireland and New York. I was also glad to hear of developments in the ministry here and of plans to bring the young people to Orhid next month.

Today, we went to Macedonia for a planned commnity session with Fr. S. Kusan,S.J. As we were on the road this morning, Bishop Hil Kabashi telephoned to wish us a happy day for St. John Eudes. Much later in the day, we were really disappointed to hear that Fr. Kusan is changed and he will leave Orhid on the 1 October. Father will do similar work to Orhid, but in Sarijevo! That is a very long way from here! He will retain some ministry work in Bulgaria and so may be able to connect with us, but only rarely. We regret his change very much as he was doing trojan work in Orhid.

Amira has already left for Lebanon and Mirjam will leave for Germany on Monday next. Lalini and I will be here. I hope to take up the Shqip classes again on Monday next and get the CEDAW report completed before life gets too busy!

Have a great weekend!

PHYSIOTHERAPY AND A GOLDEN JUBILEE!

15th AUGUST 2010 PHYSIOTHERAPY AND A GOLDEN JUBILEE!
A week of physiotherapy has sped by and my arm has responded well to the treatment. I am so glad it's back to normal, thank God.

During the week there was much preparation for Sr. Anne O'Byrne's Golden Day. In fact, we enjoyed 'Calefornian' weather for her celebration yesterday - acording to her brother, John! As well as Anne's family, we had a good number of visiting Sisters for the weekend. Today, we went to the Benedictine Monastery at Rostrevor for their Eucharistic Liturgy. Afterwards, having shared a meal, a few of our visitors began their return journey home. We now have six visitors here - I was delighted to meet so many from the other houses. I had hoped to visit but had not got time to do so.

Tomorrow, following my visit to the Fracture Clinic, I'll prepare for an early departure on Tuesday morning. As I have to take three planes I'll not reach Tirana till 11.30p.m. so it will be a long day. I am looking forward to seeing Lalini and Mirjam on Wednesday.

SINGAPORE WEDDING, DUBLIN HORSE SHOW!

7TH. AUGUST 2010 SINGAPORE WEDDING, DUBLIN HORSE SHOW!
This is a little Dublin-flavoured entry! Bernie and I returned yesterday from a super holiday, with excellent weather, in Inchydoney. As we met members of the family there, conversation mostly revolved around Tony's engagement, with exciting plans for his wedding! Long haul trips to Singapore are already being booked - there will be quite an exodus - with six members of Kevin's family already on the list for Tony's Big Day in November! Elma hopes to travel with Joe and also, Clare and Paul. Colette and Jim will travel out a week earlier. I had already declined the invitation to make the journey and said I will be happy, please God, with a video and photos!

Just now we have enjoyed the Dublin Horse Show Puissance with Venzuelan and Irish horses competing right down to the exciting Finale. There was a tie and joint-First place was shared, with both National Anthems being played before the prizegiving.

Tomorrow, I return to Belfast to begin a week of physiotherapy. Thank God my arm has been trouble-free and is back to normal for the past few weeks.

Have a great weekend - lots of Good Shepherds on the move as the Angers 'Journey' is also completed!

NEW YORK, DUBLIN AND INCHYDONEY

29TH. JULY 2010 NEW YORK, DUBLIN AND INCHYDONEY
On Wednesday it was time to say farewell to New York and head for Dublin. There was a great sense of peace as we had time to get finished with some ease. In fact, I made an early journey to JFK as Baruk Obama landed in Lower Manhatten en route to New Jersey. Traffic was very backed up but not towards the airport. All went smoothly and I now spend a few hours at Kilmacud Provincial house. There is an almost international flavour as people are moving through on holiday!

I leave in the afternoon and will travel to Inchydoney on Saturday for a holiday, with a plan to return to Belfast around August 8th. The computer will go directly to Belfast so I will catch up on the blog when I return.

Au revoir as we hope for sunshine over the coming week.

ALBANIAN CEDAW & GOOD SHEPHERD VISIT

27th. JULY 2010 ALBANIAN CEDAW AND GOOD SHEPHERD VISIT
Arriving early at the UN yesterday morning, I discovered that Arta had already returned to Albania. Merita called me to meet the State party. It included the Deputy Minister of Labour, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, Mrs Fillorete Kodra, who was also the Head of Delegation. Mrs.Brunilde Peci, The Desk Officer,UN Reporting Section, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Mrs. Dervishaj, Expert on Issues of Equal and Gender identity at the Dept. of Equal Opportunities, Ministry of Labour. Mrs.Pranvera Kamani, Chief of Basic Education Sector at the Curricula and Monitoring Dept., Ministry of Education and Science and Patricka - Representative of the Ambassador of the Republic of Albania to New York.

Those who took part all spoke in English and the dialogue picked up all the issues that had emerged in the reports and discussions during the week. My two NGO friends were delighted that the committee made it clear to the Government that many good things have happenned in Albania, but there is much more progress needed in relation to Domestic Violance, Trafficking and Roma women and girls and a number of other areas of concern. At one stage in the afternoon, Merita said to me -"Those last three questions were even in my words!" and a little later Mirela tipped me to say -"I am crying, because I have heard my questions asked as if I said them myself" Afterwards, at 5.30 we went to thank the Committee of experts. We then met the Delegates - they were pretty exhausted and went away with plenty of homework. We were well pleased with the day that also ended our involvement at United Nations for CEDAW.

Winifred and I then went with Monica, Argentina, to the Provincial house - quite a journey, having been invited for our evening meal. Sister Ellen was there and a number of other sisters whom I had not met. Also, Sister Yvette, who has replaced Ethna in Rome had arrived on holiday just an hour earlier, so there was a general air of celebration. We had a lovely evening and there was also a feeling of ending as Winifred leaves the day after me for Ireland.

This morning we had and Evaluation Meeting at the Office and gathered the fruits of our time at UN. Both Winifred and Clare really appreciated the fact that we kept up the pace, managing to attend all sessions, as well as both Training weekends. We too go home with lots of homework, for which, luckily, the agenda will not be available until the autumn! So, its a real moment of thanks for a most memorable experience - even if it does provide a somewhat daunting and challenging work role for the future.

Thank you Daniela and also Lalini, Mirjam and Amira who freed me up with the extra time to accept this challenge!

EXPERTS LUNCH AND GREENWICH VILLAGE

25th.JULY 2010 EXPERTS LUNCH AND GREENWICH VILLAGE
Thursday was great! Papua New Guinea Government reported and had "constructive dialogue" all day. Head of their delegation was the only woman in their 109 man Parliament. She is Minister for Women and has 14 staff. With her, she brought an impressive team from the Government and Attorney General's staff. I saw about 16 in all.

Lunch with the expert Committee was the highlight for us. Albanian NGO's hosted the event. Arta, Mirela and Merita had all in readiness early, plus three working papers for each guest. We sat together - at their request - for the introductions. Then, as they spoke, I served the Committee members. Following the input there were lots of questions and as they took a second round, I left having told the girls beforehand.

When arranging my work programme with Winifred on arrival, I mentioned that extending my time in New York had upset my retreat plans. Now it seemed even the weekends were full. We saw what was almost a four day gap so I grasped the moment! I emailed a sister in Greenwich Village, which I understood was closeby this house in 17th Street. A reply indicated I would be welcome and asked how I got to know of them. I replied that a minister had come four years ago to the Divine Healing Team in Belfast and told us his ministry was ecumenical as there were Sisters nearby. I was in for two SURPRISES! Greenwich was in New York, but not where I had been last time. It was "upstate" so I had to take a train. Sister Mary Elizabeth met me and she is Anglican. We drove to the convent and as we entered the 100 acre site, a deer lifted its head from taking a drink from a little lake to welcome us! The Community of six moved into this newly built convent in 2004 and their number includes one Novice who was busily engaged with a Summer Camp in the nearby 500 acre complex that includes a Healing Centre. The scenery was just glorious - rolling hills and lots of trees plus three lakes, goats and sheep and I even saw a rabbit - altogether an idyllic retreat setting. I really enjoyed the few days and feel ready for Albania reporting tomorrow. As I left, the community was enjoying a little moment of relaxation , sitting on a floating gazebo on one of the lakes - I spent just a few minutes on this very pleasant rythmic structure and enjoyed it.

Watch this space for news of Albania. I may not write tomorrow, however, as Winifred and I are invited out in the evening.

UN, "HANDCRAFTING JUSTICE" AND ALBANIA.

21ST. JULY 2010 UN, "HANDCRAFTING JUSTICE" AND ALBANIA.
We have just completed three busy days at UN. All the countries are finished now and most people will return home at the weekend. Albania has a lunchtime meeting tomorrow after Papua New Guinea completes their work. On Friday the Committee of experts has a closed Meeting all day so we are free.

Today, I took time out in the morning to visit Sister Maureen McGowan's great project - "Handcrafting Justice". I only wished all the group could have seen the work of the women from 22 countries. Maureen very kindly met me at the Metro and as we reached the project asked me - "Would you mind doing an 'Up close and personal' with the volunteers for about 20 minutes"? I had never heard the expression, so Maureen explained and thank God it went well. The volunteers were most interested in hearing about Albania and what is happening at the UN too. Maureen sent greetings to those she had met, mentioning Daniela especially.

Now that there is a gap this weekend I hope to finalize plans for a retreat. I'll be back on Sunday as Albania is "on" all day on Monday!

Have a good weekend!

TRAINING, ALBANIANS ARRIVE AND CIRCLE LINE

18 JULY 2010 TRAINING, ALBANIANS ARRIVE AND CIRCLE LINE
As I opened the blog I noted a wee error in my last entry as I did not edit same!

The highlight for me in the Training Course this weekend was the arrival of three Albanians. One is from an NGO but the other two are academics. A Professor in the School of Magistrates, one told me she more or less completed the Albanian report. That same report lacks substance but hopefully it will suffice as its the first time anyone has come from Albania. Both Winifred and I greeted them together and I think they were surprised that we have had a presence at UN for so many years. I have met and worked with each of them at the Training and I think they will be willing to continue cooperation with us in Albania. We will meet each day at the United Nations and so can get to know one another. Due to the fact Australia and Albania had their statements ready for tomorrow, our training ended in the early afternoon today.

I then decided to go along to the Circle Line, which welcomes Sisters to enjoy a cruise on the river free gratis. The reason for this generosity is due to Sisters doing wonderful work among the poor many years ago - when the owner of the Shipping Line was young. Fortunately, I arrived just as a tour was leaving so I had a marvellous three hours on the Hudson in glorious sunshine. In fact many of the days since I arrived have been 90 degrees and even 94 so today was no exception.

This evening Winifred suggested we go to a nearby cafe in Union Square for a meal which we both enjoyed. I had never been to that part of our neighbourhood and I was surprised it was so fully alive on a Sunday evening!

Have a great week!

FROM UN., TO RUSSIA, TO "THE PERFECT PINT"

17th.JULY 2010 FROM UN.,TO RUSSIA, TO "THE PERFECT PINT"
On Thursday, I went to the UN quite early as the Russian Government delegation was presenting their position and I had heard the "on the ground" reality from the very
clear picture painted by the NGO's. For some reason, their most recent population statistic came from 1994 and was 148,400,000. In their huge delegation there was a Government minister or member available for every clarification needed.

I returned to the Office for a meeting with Winifred, Clare Nolan and Argentinian Monica. We managed to link in the work of the Office with CEDAW and thought out ways of using this new process in Albania and Argentina. As previously planned, we then went out for lunch to celebrate our being together. Winifred led the way to "The Perfect Pint" in the next street - a new experience even to USA Clare! There was a real Irish touch to the meal and I cannot not resist sharing the following item from the menu as an Irish farewell -

"May you have warm words on a cold evening
A full moon on a dark night
And a smooth road all the way to your door"

Monica and I returned to the afternoon session on Russia which completed the work at UN for the week and freed us for the Training Course beginning Friday morning!

UNITED NATIONS, CENTRAL PARK AND MORE!

14TH.JULY 2010 UNITED NATIONS, CENTRAL PARK AND MORE!
An update of the past two very full and busy days. Argentina was heard by the CEDAW Committee all day yesterday and it was most challenging. The voluntary groups had prepared very well and had given their side earlier. Its really great to see how the process works so well. Each country is monitored for two years to see if the Government implements what they promise here! Today we had the Figi Islands We had learnt the voluntary side of their situation during a special lunch yesterday so we knew it would be difficult today. Figi is a police state - there was a coup so they have no freedom. Three persons cannot associate in case they are plotting so plenty of tension in their working situation.

For us its not all work and no play! Sr.Monica, Argentina, and I decided to go along to Central Park last evening for an open-air concert. We were delighted we did so. The New York Philharmonic was joined by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. This was a new departure for New York and we really enjoyed their marvellous music and soloists.
Monica came back here with me and then we went into the UN together this morning.

So, thank God, all is well so far. I enjoyed a meal this evening near the UN with 89 year old Sr. Rita's two nieces, Maura and Gerri, plus Gerri's 12 year old James , an only child. They came in from Connecticut and drove me back here afterwards which was very nice indeed!

SECURITY AND THE UNITED NATIONS!

Twalfth July 2010 SECURITY AND THE UNITED NATIONS!
I finished the training course at 1.00p.m. yesterday. This gave me time to enjoy the afternoon and lunch, recalling Fordham memories, with a girl who was studying there in my time. Pauline is from County Clare and was just anxious to chat with someone from Ireland. We both kept an eye on the World Cup final at the same time!

This morning we left the Office at 9.30a.m. to go to the opening session of CEDAW at 10.00a.m Security took over and we did not complete our admission process until three hours later!

We went to the first session this afternoon. Those that had trained from both Russia and Argentina presented their statements in great style. Afterwards, we had a debriefing session that was most useful as our Trainers pointed out the best follow-up strategy for each country. These Trainers do sessions in Geneva too so I am sure that Hedwig will be able to get involved with them in due course. The day was easy listening for us as all the input was in English. A few of the questions were answered in Russian and Spanish for which we had multi-lingual translation.

On Wednesday evening I hope to meet with a niece of Sister Rita Fleming. I am sure Maura will be interested in hearing all about Rita's 89th Birthday celebration of this week!

I have just been in touch with the Sisters in Korce but did not manage to speak with them this evening!

God bless and have a good week!

"FROM GLOBAL TO LOCAL" TRAINING DAYS!

10TH. JULY 2010 "FROM GLOBAL TO LOCAL" TRAINING DAYS!

Yesterday, I decided to join Srs.Clare and Monica in a three-day training for CEDAW. It was called - "FROM GLOBAL TO LOCAL"! Both days have been a great help and a huge insight into the coming weeks. The 15 participants included Argentinians, two from Fiji Island and the remainder were from Russia. All had excellent English, except one or two of the Argentinians. We had a Human Rights Lawyer and legal experts followed today by a representative from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. Then, those reporting prepared their statements for the United Nations meeting. All were advised to speak in English. Both days have been a great help - the organisers of the training are based in Geneva but their Office is in Kuala Lumpur. The training will be repeated for the Albanian group and I plan to join them too!

When I returned this evening a Province Leadership Team Meeting had just finished. I was delighted to meet six new Sisters including our local Provincial. Sister Ellen Kelly had graciously welcomed me to reside here. Sister cooked the evening meal, barbecue-style out on a little roof garden. We could have been miles from downtown New York! A number of the Sisters have Irish roots and we did a bit of tracing!!

Tomorrow concludes our training. We have a later start in the morning - there are plenty of Masses here so its easy to plan. Then, we move onto the United Nations on Monday for the 'real' work!

Enjoy the weekend! A special wish for a quiet and happy Twalfth to all in Belfast!

TRAVEL AND NEW YORK GOOD SHEPHERD

GOOD SHEPHERD SISTERS,
337 EAST 17TH. STREET,
NEW YORK 10003
9TH. JULY 2010

All went well yesterday following my early morning exit from Kilmacud, courtesy of Dolores. I was surprised when Immigration was very efficiently completed in Dublin thus freeing up our arrival in New York. Aer Lingus hospitality - cold drinks on entering the plane, lunch, plus tea and scones just before arrival shortened the journey. Also, I had a Dublin rugby enthusiast beside me and he regaled me with fragments of their story and plans for his coming holiday in Long Island! This left little time for the films that were available on our personal screens!

We arrived an hour ahead of schedule and it was great to meet Winifred. We came here directly. This is a very solid four or five storey building where we live on the second floor. Paulette joined us later - Sister is responsible for the many Good Shepherd Services in this part of New York, including the three groups of teenagers with problems that live in this house.

Winifred and I went off to a nearby Mass and later began to make a plan for the next few weeks. By the way, it is hot here - its being billed almost as a problem with all sorts of hints on how to keep cool. We'll take it one day at a time please God.
I promise to keep in touch!

HEALING MINISTRY AND NEW YORK " CEDAW"

6TH JULY 2010 HEALING MINISTRY AND NEW YORK "CEDAW"
Brother David Jardine, Anglican OFM, Director of the divine Healing Ministry here in Belfast came to breakfast this morning. He had requested to come and that was his only free time. I was glad to have the opportunity to thank him and his team for their daily prayer support especially since breaking my arm. He was delighted to see for himself that all is well, except for physio. that I will start tomorrow.

Later, tomorrow, I set off for Dublin en route to New York for the CEDAW meeting. The Convention for the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women begins on Monday next with Albania, Argentina and Australia reporting on their progress in recent years in relation to Human Rights and Trafficking issues. I look forward to meeting the Sisters from Australia and Argentina, plus Sisters Clare and Winifred. I am sure we will have a valuable experience over the next few weeks.

The computer travels with me, so watch this space for a little update now and then, please God.

WEST OF IRELAND, KNOCK SHRINE, LILA, USA

INDEPENDENCE DAY, USA, 2010 WEST OF IRELAND, KNOCK SHRINE, LILA, USA.
I returned to Belfast last evening having had a really good week in the West of Ireland. We had great weather and as we had the Atlantic Ocean on three sides of the house all was delightful. My sister Bernie drove which meant we could set our own pace.

Highlight of our week, apart from spending time at various nearby beaches, was a two-day visit to Knock Shrine. There was an apparition of the Blessed Virgin witnessed by 15 persons at this village Church in 1879. Two Commissions of Enquiry accepted the testimony of the group as trustworthy, so Knock draws many pilgrims. Our hometown, Clonakilty Church Choir, was invited to sing Mass in the Basilica on Saturday, 26 June, for the National Pilgrimage of St. Joseph's Young Priest's Society. We enjoyed the excellent singing and met lots of friends including our sister-in-law, Elma. Two Archbishops Concelebrated the Mass; there were six or seven Bishops among the large group of priests. The huge crowd included more than 100 Youth 2000 members; in Belfast our Contemplative Sisters host this group for Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament each evening so we know a number of the group.

On our return to Dublin, there was a message from a school friend who was arriving from Vienna, en route to her community in Florida. Lila is a Sister of St.Clare and we were happy that we managed to meet her for a few hours. I then returned to Belfast.

An email this morning from Sr. Winifred helped to remind me of Independence Day. I wished her a happy celebration and now wish the same to each one, especially other USA blog readers!

Miropafshim and God bless!

FRACTURE CLINIC, "THE PRIESTS",CONNEMARA

21ST.JUNE 2010 FRACTURE CLINIC, "THE PRIESTS" AND CONNEMARA!
My visit to the Fracture Clinic today was good. Thank God all is well. The bone has knit, looking almost perfect. Its amazing to look at the X-rays. I am truly grateful for all the prayers. I met with the physio. and there is work to be completed. I came home armed with exercises while I await an appointment.

On Saturday night, four of us went to hear - "THE PRIESTS" at the Waterfront Hall in the city centre. They sang a number of religious pieces and then treated us to a few hilarious numbers that delighted the locals. We were almost two thousand in the audience.

Tomorrow, I go to Dublin en route to Connemara for a holiday by the sea. The weather is glorious and is set to continue.
Thanks again for your support and prayer.

KORCE, TIRANA, BELFAST

16 JUNE 2010 KORCE, TIRANA, BELFAST
A brief note to say my journey from Korce to Belfast was good, with a very early departure from Tirana at 6.15a.m. A late departure from a rainy Rome of more than half an hour, led to a gallop through Heathrow, with my name being called out three times en route to the plane! All went well and we arrived in Belfast right on time. I was met by Sr. Noeleen and a very excited 98 year old Sr Lelia who was delighted to come to the airport!!

A 'first' for today. I drove to Crossgar which is about 20 miles each way and felt fine. So, thank God, progress is being made towards return to normal life! I will add an update following my Fracture Clinic visit on Monday next.

Au revoir and God bless!

HOTEL ENKELANA POGRADEC CONFERENCE

13 JUNE 2010 HOTEL ENKELANA POGRADEC CONFERENCE
A very early furgon - minibus - got me to Hotel Enkelana, Pogradec, shortly after 8.00a.m. yesterday morning. The Girl's Leadership Conference had begun at 4.00p.m. on Friday. More than 40 girls, mostly in their final school year and from all over Albania, plus Peace Corps. Volunteers attended.

The morning opened with a talk from a former Supreme Court Justice who is now a University Lecturer; I met her afterwards and she spoke English quite well. Then, Lauren Ready, a Volunteer and I presented a 40 minute 'Rotating Break-Out Session' on Trafficking/Violence. This was very well received and we repeated it three times which took the morning! Following lunch, I was free until 6.00p.m. when we met in the full group for what was listed as Current Women Leaders Panel. There were four of us plus my interpreter. I was placed beside Elena, the woman that has an organisation in Pogradec, called "One Woman" and runs a helpline in relation to domestic violence. Each of us gave a 10-15 minute presentation of our 'organisation'. This was a great opportunity - Good Shepherd structure and geographical spread plus our main focus. Ours was received with great interest and in the question time that followed most of the questions came my way. A question about what we do for the women, opened up the whole area of preventive work with women and the Hands of Hope Project for HIV/AIDS in Thailand. Luckily, I had a few of the silk butterflies and cards with me and they were viewed with much interest later over dinner. I had been invited to stay overnight and got an early furgon back this morning. Our contact with the Peace Corps. will be ongoing.

Now I will prepare for Tirana tomorrow. I have a very early exit from Imelda's for the 6.10a.m. plane to Rome on Tuesday en route to Belfast. I hope to blog a little for a few weeks at least.

Au revoir and God bless!

SR.GUDULA'S VISIT AND THE PEACE CORPS.

11JUNE 2010 SR.GUDULA'S VISIT AND THE PEACE CORPS.
Sr. Gudula's visit to us was truly blessed with magnificant weather and her week was most enjoyable. Mirjam travelled to Tirana with her today as her plane to Frankfurt is very early in the morning. On Tuesday we went to Pogradec, met the bishop and visited his site for the house. All went really smoothly and he was impressed with Sister's experience of building and planning. Our day ended with a very pleasant visit to Korca restaurant in Pogradec.

This is a busy weekend here. With Mirjam in Tirana, Lalini has travelled to Fier with ten young adults, and will return on Sunday evening. I go to Pogradec very early in the morning and will also return on Sunday. Mine is a surprise invitation from the Peace Corps. I was delighted to accept even though I had planned to pack my case!

Enjoy the weekend!

LEZHJA ASSEMBLY AND CLARENCE GILYARD!

6 JUNE 2010 LEZHJA ASSEMBLY AND CLARENCE GILYARD!
I begin by assuring you I had much help and support from Mirjam in getting the Lushne videos onto the blog - hope they worked for you!

Yesterday, I attended the General Assembly of Religious. This was held at "Hotel Rafaelo", Shengjin, Lezhja and about 60 religious attended. Shengjin is more than six hours from here so I stayed overnight, enjoying Sr. Imelda's Loreto hospitality in Tirana, both going and returning. As we arrived in the meeting hall I was on the lookout for someone to interpret, as everything, even the progremme was in Italian! Seeing a Dominican habit, I asked for help! In fact, I had approached the main speaker. He pointed me towards a check shirt, the wearer of which turned out to be a Father Ivan, Maltese priest in Durres. He did an excellent job and the focus of the talk was collaboration and the transformation that can take place if we are fully inserted in mission, even through the 'shadow'. I will type up the notes elsewhere. Mass followed, celebrated by the Papal Nuncio. At the end, he presented each of us with a little bottle of perfumed oil, symbol of the Word of God permeating our lives. An excellent lunch completed the programme!

As we left the Assembly at Shengjin, a Focolare member encouraged us to attend a drama later in Tirana, emphasising that Clarence Gilyard was responsible for the project. I had never heard of him and was amazed at the profile of his films and acting given before the show by the American Ambassador! The drama that followed was -"The Permanant Collection." It was excellently performed by Clarence in English and the other actors in Shqip, with the relevant translations on a side screen. There was a standing ovation at the end. What a surprise when this same Clarence turned up at our English Corpus Christi Mass in the Cathedral this morning and did one of the readings.

I have been back in Korce for more than four hours now. So far I have not seen any of the community or our visitor Sr. Gudula. I presume Mirjam has gone to Macedonia to bring back Lalini from retreat. The glorious weather must have tempted Gudula and Amira to make the journey too.

Have a good week - regret I cannot share the perfumed oil with you!

LUSHNJE, CONCERT AND SPEEDY VISITATION

31 MAY 2010 LUSHNJE, CONCERT AND SPEEDY VISITATION
We were without internet from Friday until Sunday evening - due to an error with a switch in the house. I was the only one affected and maybe the blog as my three companions were away! Mirjam quickly set things right when she returned quite weary from Lushnje. She and Amira had left the house on Saturday morning at 4.30a.m. for the five hour drive with the teenagers to the Albanian Youth Day. Lushnje was all sunshine and music. Mirjam succeeded in capturing some snippets of video on her camera. I may try to add the links here tomorrow for a glimpse of our reality!

Last evening, Bea, our houseowner and I went along to the nearby Cultural Centre for a concert of classical music. This was my first such experience in Korce and the standard of the three women, pianist, cellist and violinist was extremely high. We gathered all three were Albanian and we thoroughly enjoyed the hour.

Today, Feast of the Visitation, Mirjam went to Pogradec to meet with Mons Hil Kabashi and two visitors from a German funding group. About 5.00p.m. I had a phone call to say the funders were coming on here. In fact they were about three minutes away, passing the Greek Cathedral. One was an Australian priest, a missionary of the Sacred Heart, same as Myross Wood in West Cork. He claimed to have a small fraction of Irish ancestry. The other, Peter, was very clearly German but had excellent English. They liked our setup here but left quickly as they were going to visit our Maltese catechists and then return to Tirana this evening.

Au revoir until I attempt to insert this You Tube link for you in the near future!

MANY VOICES AND COMMUNITY BUILDING

25 MAY 2010 MANY VOICES AND COMMUNITY BUILDING
FR.MAREK,OFM, came for Mass on Sunday. He prayed in Czechi and we followed with Albanian Northern dialect, Sri Lankan, German, Arabic, Irish, Maltese, English and local Albanian. Not bad for a congregation of around 30 persons who also sang superbly.

Yesterday morning we left the house at 8.00a.m en route to Macedonia. As we travelled, in each field there were one or two persons already busily at work while many others walked along the road with their shovels. We also saw five or six small flocks of sheep, each guarded by its own shepherd. The countryside was a hive of industry! The Border Control went smoothly and then Macedonia - not a person in sight until we reached the city of Orhid more than half an hour later. At 10.30a.m. we began our very important day - our first in a series of planned community building days, facilitated by the Ex-Provincial Jesuit of Croatia. Fr. Stjepan Kuson has an impressive Retreat and Pastoral Centre which is modern in style and has accommodation for more than 50 persons. This is situated right beside his Diocesan Church. In this centre Marriage Encounter is organised for a few countries, courses are organised for those working with Special Needs and for those who visit landmine victims - all this as well as retreats. Our day was not all work. After lunch we went to the beach - less than five minutes walk. There we were persuaded to go for a half hour boat ride by the owner of a little motor boat called Captain Cook! This was an ideal way to see the city. We saw a castle on the hill and glimpsed four or five churches - a few of the 362 that the city boasts according to our guide! Probably 361 are Macedonian Orthodox as the Catholic population is tiny. Our day continued till mid-afternoon and we left very satisfied and aware it had been a valuable day for our community development.

Au revoir.

PENTECOST GREETINGS FROM KORCE

22 MAY 2010 PENTECOST GREETINGS FROM KORCE
Greetings and blessings for our feast of Pentecost. There were no 'ash' problems as I left Belfast yesterday, thank God, and flights were on time. I caught up with developments in the new anti-trafficking group, while enjoying a great welcome from Sr. Imelda Poole in Tirana last night. This morning I caught an early minibus and arrived here before 1.00p.m. The neighbours were waiting, each with roses! I am delighted to be back and feel settled in already.

As I left Belfast word had come that approximately 700 members of our Good Shepherd family are gathering to celebrate this special festive weekend. Such a get-together will have a unique flavour. I am sure we will catch up on on its special moments in due course.

Enjoy the feast!

ANGERS LAMP, OBERAMMERGAU AND FATIMA

14 MAY 2010 ANGERS LAMP, OBERAMMERGAU AND FATIMA
Our Angers Lamp is burning for the German Province this week. Here in Belfast, the Sister leading Evening Prayer clearly adds - 'and Albania' at each gathering. Our thoughts are a little more in Germany than is usual just now. This is due to the fact that Sr. Noeleen got a surprise invitation to join an Ecumenical Celtic Studies group that left for Oberammergau yesterday. Already, Noeleen has called us to say the group has wonderful accommodation and all are looking forward to the highlight of the week - the famous Passion Play. She is still amazed with the generosity of it all being total gift for her. We know the group well as we have attended their Study Group for some years.

We got an email from Limerick on Wednesday suggesting that we watch 'Nationwide' - an Irish television currant affairs programme that evening. We did so and discovered it was a documentary on Fatima. This was based on a group of twenty-two LIMERICK women led by Sr. Anna Landy. In the course of telling the FATIMA story, the presenter showed the Limerick group in their new Irish Hotel - St. Brigids. Anna was interviewed not only about having her group in Fatima but also on our Irish Church problems. She presented really well- looking very much at ease, she spoke very clearly and with great compassion woven throughout. The programme was a very apt lead-in to the Pope's visit yesterday.

Enjoy a good weekend!

FRACTURE CLINIC PROGRESS REPORT

10 MAY 2010 FRACTURE CLINIC PROGRESS REPORT
A little update on my visit to a very busy Fracture Clinic at the Royal Victoria Hospital today. My consultant said 'union' of the bone or 'knitting' was well in progress. Good co-ordination of upper and lower arm plus fingers showed that this work is well under way, thank God. Having seen the level of mobility, I was sent round to the physiotherapist who gave me three exercises for everyday use. Also,
I had been using a rather cumbersome sling and this was changed for two much lighter ones. These are interchangeable and came with the freedom to omit wearing either. So, altogether, the visit was worthwhile and my next appointment is in June which suits well.
So, may I say a very sincere - 'Thank you' for your prayers and good wishes thst have helped me this far. Please keep up the good work until healing is complete.
Again, thanks!

TO KORCE VIA ST. CATHERINE OF SIENA!!

30th. APRIL 2010 TO KORCE VIA ST.CATHERINE OF SIENA!!
Yesterday, a Novitiate companion of mine celebrated her Feastday. As is customary, we ended her day with a community evening for which Catherine requested that we see ALBANIA and especially KORCE!! Luckily, I had brought back a DVD with me. While in Mons, we were invited to spend a day in Liege at the home of our Albanian teachers, Esme and Adrian. That was a working day and we finished with a DVD trip to Albania after which we were each presented with a copy of that DVD. The Sisters were quite delighted to journey through the country seeing ruins of ancient monasteries and the majestic mountains here and there. There was a special moment of excitement when the cameraman focused on the map and showed KORCE! There followed a minute or two of the very familiar road in front of the Greek Cathedral, the little museum made of the earliest school in Korce - we pass this building when we go into the city and we also saw a few of the older houses in our part of the city. One Sister even asked if she could possibly see the WALL THAT BROKE MY ARM!! We even caught a glimpse of the mountain that is visible from our prayer room before we moved to what seemed to me to be Voskopoia. There we saw icons in the church and some very wintry scenes before moving onto a glimpse of Pogradec with the lake in full summer style. One or two other towns were also shown. The Sisters were very happy indeed to see the reality of our Albania.

Tomorrow, we have our community celebration for the 70th. Anniversary of Mother Foundress' Canonization. Many friends will join us for a Special Mass when our prayers will reach out globally to each and every person. Surely, its a great moment!
Enjoy the weekend.

FEAST OF CELEBRATION

24-25 APRIL 2010 GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY
Yesterday, a group of six musicians, friends of Lys Marie community, planned a beautiful Mass to which we were invited together with our group of FRIENDS. We all agreed our celebration was fitting for Mother Foundress' 70th. Anniversary of Canonization. Our Sri Lankan Vivienne welcomed us with Evelyn and later Regina, who is with us from New York Province, led us with very special Intercessions. A Gaelic solo after Communion was followed by a rich harmonized Magnificat that served as a very clear reminder indeed of Mother Foundress.

During the buffet lunch that followed our joyful sharing of memories proved to be a fitting tribute to our internationality. We had a real sense of appreciation of our visits to Angers and, even more so, of our time spent at Noirmoutier where it all began for us.

Today, Good Shepherd Sunday, is also very special for each of us. We are enjoying a more low key family celebration.

Both yesterday and today are also an experience of shepherding in KORCE as the local religious, just three Italian Sisters, were invited with our Maltese catechist friends to gather for Mass celebrated by Bishop Hil KABASHI. I have no doubt a fitting meal of multi-national flavour will have followed. Maybe there was even a preview of a very relevant Powerpoint presentation too!!

Joyous moments to each one during these days!

SURPRISES FOR ASSOCIATES/FRIENDS & SOUVENIR

18 APRIL 2010 SURPRISES FOR ASSOCIATES/FRIENDS AND SOUVENIR
On Friday evening I surprised our Associates/Friends at a Belfast city-centre restaurant, Olio, where they had planned a get-together for dinner. Their initial surprise was added to when each received two invitations! One was to our community here to celebrate the 70th. Anniversary of Mother Foundress' Canonization on May 1. Sister Evelyn also invited the group to join our contemplative community for a special Mass and refreshments on Saturday next, feast of Saint Euphrasia. I have requested each one who has visited Angers and Noirmoutier to bring along their favourite memory photograph for sharing too!

Earlier on Friday afternoon I had gone with Sr. Noeline to meet with Rosaleen Daly, sister of our late friend Cardinal Daly RIP. She had planned to take us to his home to walk through and choose a souvenir, as the house will now become Diocesan property. It was a poignant moment for me, having left him in excellent health in September. I chose a little book - "Healing the Wound of Humanity" sub-titled 'The Spirituality of John Henry Newman' by Ian Ker. The flyleaf told me the writer is a Roman Catholic priest who has taught at British and American universities. The bookcase contained several other books by the same author. I am very happy to have this little book, even though it is unsigned. I plan to read it prior to Cardinal Newman's canonization later this year.

I am aware that there will also be awareness-raising about Mother Foundress in KORCE next weekend. Please God I will catch up with the proposed powerpoint presentation at a later stage and I look forward to hearing how it is accepted locally. We have found the people really hungry for any Christian knowledge or sharing of our own religious story.

Have a good week - we plan to walk with the preparation material kindly provided
for our Novena for Saturday!

'LITTLE UPDATE' - PROGRESS REPORT

12 APRIL 2010 'LITTLE UPDATE' - PROGRESS REPORT
My two-day journey from KORCE to BELFAST was uneventful, thank God. The detailed possibilities inherent in travelling by air, with a broken arm, had arrived in graphic detail with my ticket. This was courtesy of the travel agent, so I was a bit apprehensive about the journey, to say the least!!!

I went directly from the airport to the Fracture Clinic at the ROYAL VICTORIA HOSPITAL. They took X-rays and told me I had a serious break. They put my arm in a sling and sent me home with an appointment for today.

Over Easter, I built up a huge resource of prayer - the Community, our Contemplatives
and the Divine Healing Ministry Team. In fact, I asked everyone. Today thank God, all went well. More X-rays but not a word about surgery, pins or plates!!! My consultant, who had seen me last time, gave me a few exercises and asked me to make a further appointment for the second Monday in MAY. At that point he hopes I will be ready for PHYSIO. He assured me that the prognosis is good - healing time six weeks.
He sees no problem about limited travel in a couple of weeks. He said it would be best to leave driving until June. I really felt the` benefit of the prayer at each moment.

A big "THANK YOU" to each one of you. I promise another update on my return from the Clinic on the 10 May. Hopefully that will be a moment for longterm plans and a return to everyday living.

DOUBLE KORCE AND MIRUPAFSHIM!

30 MARCH 2010 DOUBLE KORCE AND MIROPAFSHIM!
Time to complete my previous entry!

On Friday morning, with the good support of Sister Lalini and her Shqip teacher, Nadia, I met with Dr. KORCE. Very quickly, he put on a light gauze bandage-sling and shook hands saying - "We do not set bones here. Come back and see me in six weeks"
Later, options were discussed - Greek Hospital in Thessalonica, Orhid in Macedonia or Belfast. For me, especially from the language point of view, I happily chose to go to Ireland. Travel plans have taken a little time. I leave today on the only direct flight there is to London, due to arrive there just before midnight. Please God by tomorrow I'll be at the source of help and hopefully on the road to return to KORCE. For now, its MIROPAFSHIM or AU REVOIR.

I plan to give a little update, but not many, over the next few weeks - maybe a 'Progress Report' or two! In the meantime, a happy Easter with many good moments and safe travelling too!

To be continued!

COLOUR CHANGE, FEAST OF ANNUNCIATION

29 MARCH 2010 COLOUR CHANGE, FEAST OF ANNUNCIATION
About two weeks ago, I thought about a change of colour for Spring! What a surprise when past entries freshened up as well!

The feast of ANNUNCIATION brought our God of Surprises fully alive. We had had our young adults here the previous evening practising their Easter dance for two hours, so the festive season seemed very close indeed.

During Thursday morning my apartment companion stumbled on the road, managing some minor damage to one knee and an ankle. In the afternoon, just as she returned with this news, I was leaving for our Communion Service. We spoke a little, so then I made haste. Seeing a little length of footpath, I decided to leave our cobblestones. In making the transition, I tripped/slipped and hit a wall! As I walked on, I decided to changed direction and head for the nearby hospital! Some minutes later, armed with an X-ray, I met Dr. Korce. His nurse assistant sewed my blouse onto my T-shirt and I arrived home literally in stitches, much to the amusement of the Sisters. I also had an invitation to return on Friday morning! So, this entry is necessarily incomplete due to "Work in Progress" - watch this space!

Every blessing for Holy Week.

MOUNTAIN 'RESEARCH' AND THIS WEEK!

23 MARCH 2010 MOUNTAIN 'RESEARCH' AND THIS WEEK!
On Saturday last we went on a little mountain 'research' trip. We were 500 metres higher than Korce. At 1,300 metres above sea-level we had brilliant sunshine and a fair amount of the fast-disappearing snow. I refer to the 'research' dimension of our journey - we wanted to see if this would suit for a "visitor's tour" .........!

This week is a little different as there is the Muslim welcoming of Spring. Monday was a Bank and School Holiday. We were unaware of this until it was too late to cancel our classes but we were happy to continue as usual. There were some festive fires at the weekend and also a traditional biscuit made and enjoyed mainly in the city of Elbason. We were invited to visit a Muslim family. We were welcomed by a grandmother, mother and daughter. Granny had come along specially to meet us. She spoke vividly of her difficult life during the Communist regime. She wept as she spoke - her memories are very fresh. We ate fruit and sipped a strange non-alcoholic concoction!

On my return, I opened the computer and a young teacher from Ballina, Co.Mayo had just been able to make SKYPE contact with me for the first time!. We had been on the Orientation for Mission Course together at Kimmage in Dublin. She is now in Brazil and we really enjoyed catching up with one another. She told me I am the only person from the course with whom she has contact. I began to realize the importance for us of Skype; though, in fact, we did not have it for the rest of the weekend! Even now and then it is a great means of communication.

May the blessing of Spring stay with us from now onwards!

"Echo Test"! Saint Patrick's Day

17 MARCH 2010 "ECHO TEST"! SAINT PATRICK'S DAY.
On Monday last, I accompanied a neighbour, Ola, at her request, to our local clinic. As we returned, Ola asked me to go to the hospital with her for an "Echo Test". The visit really extended my language skills beyond their 'comfort zone'! However, I was delighted to view the baby, due in August please God, and to listen to its strong heartbeat. This was my third such visit to the clinic here - a new venture for me!

Yesterday, Lalini and I went to Tirana. It was much more Springlike there - cherry blossoms everywhere and I saw my first daffodils and violets of the year! We had been asked to suggest names for our new trafficking group. From my limited vocabulary, I suggested the word "URAT" which means "the bridges". In view of all the connections we have to buid up among ourselves and key persons in the field, the group accepted this name. I think of it as Uniting Religious Against Trafficking. There is no similar wording in Shqip, but we decided the symbol is sufficient.

Saint Patrick's Day must surely begin with a huge "Thank you" for the cards of all shapes and sizes that have arrived in recent days to welcome the feast. They came from Singapore and New York and many places in between! They truly made a difference to the day especially those with Irish Music in the background! Our Bishop has just telephoned now to add his greetings.

Slan limh go leir!!!

SERENITY HOTEL, WOMEN'S RIGHTS IN ALBANIA

10 MARCH 2010 SERENITY HOTEL, WOMEN'S RIGHTS IN ALBANIA
On Monday, Lalini, Mirjam and I left for Tirana. Our first stop was a satisfactory visit to the Macedonian Embassy. We left armed with two Visa application forms for Amira and Lalini.

We went to the Caritas Hotel where we had booked. We were not happy with their setup and contacted Sr.Imelda Poole. With her help, we stayed at the Serenity Hotel and it was just that!! Really comfortable, central, economical, opposite the Jesuit Church, and close to our conference venue - the Tirana International Hotel. The conference was a valuable contribution to our inculturation -"Women's Rights in Albania for Freedom, Justice and to speak their Truth" Based on a survey of 440 Albanian women it was key to our day. We were given a clear picture of their very difficult situation. A film based on the survey interviews was most enlightening.

Thank God we had a really good journey back to Korce. There had been heavy snow but the roads were quite clear and dry for most of the journey. Today we have a blizzard unlike anything we have experienced so far!!

BELFAST CALLS; INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

7 MARCH 2010 BELFAST CALLS AND INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
Today began with an early morning telephone call from the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast! Wilma, a Protestant woman, known to us over the years in Sussex Place, got a blackout in the city-centre and wanted to get in touch. I thought it caring of the hospital to call and I had a nice chat with Wilma!

About two weeks ago, I noted that today was my day to arrange our Sunday hour of prayer. I asked the Sisters if could we have prayer for International Women's Day and invite women to join us. We had a beautiful service this afternoon. There were 21of us. The group included one child, Joanna, and a young Catholic boy, Emmanuel. We used English, French and Shqip. Amira read the core Scripture of the Canaanite woman in Arabic, then it was dramatized in English and again read in Shqip. People shared prayers very simply, - we were six nationalities! We had Greek Orthodox persons, Protestant Evangelicals, Catholics from our own church and a few who are unbaptised. We are truly delighted and there was a great atmosphere after as we shared fruit juice and delicious cake made by Amira. Maria, our local church "leader" proposed we follow today with an outing after Easter! We felt our venture was worthwhile and a new event for KORCE too!

ULLI RESTAURANT, MACEDONIAN "HICCUP"!

5 MARCH 2010 ULLI RESTAURANT, MACEDONIAN "HICCUP"!
On Wednesday last we finally accepted an invitation from our proprietor, Bea, and drove with her to the almost-completed ULLI Restaurant! This is a new high-risk venture of her sister Luma with her husband Ulli. Its about 10-12 kms. from Korce and is very elaborate. We were eight, and a few enjoyed mountain rainbow trout caught in a nearby stream. We managed to stop and see that stream on our way back!
I think the restaurant will open for business tomorrow.

Yesterday, at 2.30, when Lalini had finished her Shqip class and Mirjam got back from giving her German class at Preca College, we set off for Macedonia. We went mainly to regularise the car. We had a "hiccup" at the second frontier when Lalini was refused admission - Macedonia has "no agreement with Sri Lanka" and Sister produced her Belgian card a little late. We had to retrace our steps to Tushemisht village where we left Lalini in a hotel - this took about five minutes. Our second exit and entry took so long, as all our papers had to be re-examined following our five-minute exit, we almost gave up! We got to Orhid and the three of us relaxed a little. Our visit ended with Mass in Croatian! We hope to settle the visa "hiccup" next week, please God, in Tirana.

Have a good weekend!

SPRING ARRIVES WITH A FLOURISH!

1st. MARCH 2010 SPRING ARRIVES WITH A FLOURISH!
Spring has arrived with a flourish! As we finished Evening Prayer yesterday evening we saw the fires on the hills around Korce. Two were particularly bright and an impressive size, so Mirjam got some excellent photos. Later, Lalini and I went to nearby waste ground that had another fire. We walked in the city and saw two more with another by the Cathedral that had just finished. Then today, in each Orthodox home they bake KULACE - a cake with figs, nuts and raisins. We had no less than three sets of visitors bringing us this cake and assuring us we would have a good summer. This does not sound very much like Lent! My Albanian teacher had told me of these traditions. I will now have to hear and see what will happen later in the month for the Muslim Spring celebration!

We also had the Bishop for Mass yesterday and he dined here with us afterwards. We were very glad he promised to do his best to visit us at Easter. He will be en route to the Czech Republic, but luckily they will travel via Macedonia, which hopefully will enable him to divert in this direction during Easter week.

Blessings and prayers especially for those in recent fracture accidents.

"WOMAN OF COURAGE" and UN REPORTING

23 FEBRUARY 2010 "WOMAN OF COURAGE" AND UN REPORTING
This afternoon, Sister Amira shared with us the good news that Sister Marie-Claude
Naddaf, Syria, is one of eight women chosen by the American Government from as many countries, as a "WOMEN OF COURAGE". They will be honoured first in Washington, beginning on International Women's Day, March 8, and then in New York. Marie-Claude surely deserves the award. She has had a huge involvement with 1,200 families of the 1,000,000 Iraqi refugees that have poured into Damascus since the war. Sister also has a very modern unit for victims of domestic violence. The Counselling Centre attached to this has already received an award of excellence from the French Government.

Later on this year there will be a reporting session at the UN New York on the work towards the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women. Three countries are due to report - Albania, Argentina and Australia. I am due to attend to see what developments are planned in relation to Albania. Please God, the work will also include some solutions for our trafficking problems.

Winter is having a last fling this week with snow and rain! We look forward to March 1 when the Greek Orthodox celebrate the arrival of Spring. Later, on March 14, the Muslims also celebrate, so hopefully Spring for us is just around the corner!

TIRANA VISIT AND TRAFFICKING MEETING

18 FEBRUARY 2010 TIRANA VISIT AND TRAFFICKING MEETING.
My journey to Tirana on Tuesday went very smoothly. I was met by Imelda Poole, Loreto Sister of the English Province, who had offered overnight accommodation. We had a good evening of Loreto chat sharing on links to their Irish Province and my years in Loreto, Gorey. We did this while enjoying a meal ending with a Shrove Tuesday touch of delicious pancakes!

We went to an early morning Mass at the nearby Jesuit Church and had our ashes cross made on bowed heads rather than our foreheads!

Our meeting began with a Powerpoint presentation that included a talk on RENATE - Religious in Europe Networking Against Trafficking and Exploitation. This group was established on the 25 March 2009 and has elected a Core Group of six Sisters to carry the work forward. A photograph of the Core Group showed Sister Helene Halligon,RGS is right there on our behalf! They have undertaken to organise a European Conference in Krakow, Poland for September 2011. This will involve 100 participants, hopefully with 50 from Eastern Europe, involved in work against Trafficking! So, there is a lot to be done at ground level in the meantime. The Sisters of eight nationalities were really enthusiastic and agreed to set to work on March 17, naming the group and making a Plan of Action. I was really glad to have made the journey to this new beginning. It was nice too to hear Noreen's group APT named as a good work model.
Afterwards, Imelda and I enjoyed what was a 'FAST' meal in every way and I was happy to get a minibus immediately arriving back Korce at 5.00p.m. Au revoir.

WEATHER AND AMAZING NEWSFLASH!

SHROVE TUESDAY - 16 FEBRUARY 2010. WEATHER AND AMAZING NEWSFLASH
The heavy snow we have had over the weekend began to clear yesterday and, even though we have plenty of slush, the bright sunshine has convinced me travel is now possible. I hope to leave in the early afternoon for Tiranna, for the 9.30a.m. meeting tomorrow.
We have just had the most amazing newsflash - truly a big surprise. Its the possibility of very special visitors during Eastertime.
All I can say is - watch this SPACE as we await confirmation!

WORK INVITATIONS AND OUR FIRST MASS!

8th.FEBRUARY 2010 WORK INVITATIONS AND OUR FIRST MASS!
On Thursday last an invitation arrived to a conference in Tirana. It is being organised by Loreto IBVM Sisters as part of their 400th anniversary celebrations and will take place in March. A one-day event its on Women's Rights in Albania. The second invitation arrived on Friday and is for a meeting in Tirana next week. This is a small group meeting to see what can be done for trafficked women here. I look forward to both and am glad to have already seen that Albanian Government Report on Women and its Shadow Report by 10 Non-Governmental agencies.

We have had a great weekend! Our Maltese friends have a young priest visiting and he has said Mass in our Prayer Room, not once but twice. He he will come again tomorrow before he leaves for Rome. Father Kevin is called after Kevin Keegan, footballer - I had thought there was an Irish connection! Father is just two years ordained and is completing his Doctorate in Canon Law. We were glad to see the three candidates for the Maltese Society join our group each evening.

We are very aware of today's feast as it was ceremony day so often. Au revoir.

'A CRUMB OF HISTORY' AND 96 YEARS YOUNG!

3 FEBRUARY 2010 'A CRUMB OF HISTORY' AND 96 YEARS YOUNG!
A word about yesterday as it was truly a crumb of history!
It was snowing as we left Korce at 6.30a.m. We were eight - two Franciscan Sisters from Bilisht, two Maltese catechists and us four. We had snow for most of the first hour to Pogradec. We continued for another two hours, with caution, through slush and snowdrifts to reach Elbason. Our FIRST Diocesan Meeting for Religious was scheduled there for 9.00a.m. On arrival we were ushered into a large unheated hall, where we sat on 'infants' benches.(I was reminded of enduring similar seating when we attended meetings to get a new Nursery School in the Markets area of Belfast!!). The input was good, given by a Jesuit lecturer at Skhodra seminary. It was bi-lingual - phrases in Shqip were repeated in Italian as the composition of the sixty or so religious was largely Italian. I had a Shqip transcript, supported by an invaluable whispered English translation by Maltese David. Bishop Kabashi then said Mass. One of Mother Teresa's sisters assured me later thst she had counted 16 priests on the sanctuary with the Bishop! We were quite ready for lunch after which we had a GLORIOUS journey back. The roads were much improved and the scenery was breathtaking with sunshine on the panorama of snowscenes.

Monday morning brought a delightful greeting for St. Brigid's Day! An email came from a great Belfast Contemplative - Josephine. She told me she was 96 on Saturday last. Sister added that a few months ago she was invited to join another Sister, who was being initiated into computer skills. Josephine made such progress she quickly got her own address. I could not help thinking that Spring and new life come in many ways. Sister now enjoys having added emailing to her many gifts.
Enjoy what is new in Spring for you!

ST BRIGID, THE BISHOP AND ANNE!

1ST.FEBRUARY 2010 FEAST OF ST. BRIGID, THE BISHOP AND ANNE!
This is a little entry, mainly to send greetings to each one who is fortunate enough to bear the name, BRIGID. Today heralds the welcoming of Spring in Ireland! Enjoy your special day!

Our snowscene thawed in time for our Bishop Hil Kabashi to make the six hour journey here to say Mass yesterday. Afterwards, we invited him with his driver, Dimitri, for dinner. We were also joined by Anne, a young teacher who is unbaptized and Greek Orthodox. She has expressed great interest in our Catholic Church and was at Mass with us yesterday. Anne was a great help as a 'bridge' enabling conversation! Usually, the talk would quickly drift into German but not yesterday. We welcomed blue skies and great sunshine as our visitors left for Vlore.

Today, we are back to white skies and snow. Spring does not begin here for another month! Hope you have Spring weather to celebrate the day!

'RAINER TOOK COMPUTER' AND CAROLINE!

28 JANUARY 2010 'RAINER TOOK COMPUTER' AND CAROLINE!
'Rainer took computer' - this little note in my diary on Monday last ended a weekend in which I experienced my first significant computer virus! This computer has served me without a problem since 2004. On Saturday last that situation changed when a severe rash of problems developed very quickly, complicated by a double virus infection! Rainer, one of our Maltese friends, led the treatment team of three! They worked all week and this evening the computer has come back. It was discharged from treatment, renewed, full of new life and truly remade. I am so grateful to Rainer, David and our Mirjam.

On Tuesday I visited the wife of an American pastor, at her invitation. Caroline has lived here for 20 years. She told me it has taken her most of that time to understand the Albanian culture. With four of us in community, plus the support of friends and neighbours, I am optimistic we will have at least some cultural understanding much more quickly please God.

Winter has visited us with snow-covered ground and rooftops and even the disappearance of the mountains for a few days this week. Surprisingly, it is not as cold as previously but calls for caution when out and about!

Christmas cards continued to arrive until earlier this week and mostly matched the local scene here, where we all keep well.
Have a good weekend and enjoy the feast of our Irish patron - St.Brigid on Monday.

SPECIAL DAY AND MOROVA MOUNTAIN SUMMIT

21JANUARY 2010 SPECIAL DAY AND MOROVA MOUNTAIN SUMMIT!
Today is special for me so I decided to make a blog entry. I first visited Good Shepherd in Cork on this date and entered later that year. So, I decided this morning to give myself a treat!

With blue skies, great sunshine and the Temp. -4, I headed for the mountains! I have wanted to do this since I arrived here. Shqip lesson, dinner and off I went and had a tough climb. It was tarmac until the last 100 yards or so as two hotels are being built at a high altitude. At last I reached the Cross on the summit of Morova. This is a landmark as it is illuminated at night. On the way up, I passed two shepherds guarding their flocks, and a man protecting a herd of goats. The goats were bigger than I have ever seen! Also, I saw at least 20 waterfalls all like giant icicles in the rocks. The view from the top was superb looking down on the city encircled with snow-capped mountains. I forgot to take my camera!

I returned from my adventure in good time for our Communion Service. I feel truly delighted and not at all exhausted. In fact I have energy to get a little study done now!
Have a good weekend!
